Civil War Comparisons

Within the province of Skyrim there is an everlasting civil war between the Stormcloaks and the Imperials.

It began when High King Torygg was slain by the Jarl of Windhelm, Ulfric Stormcloak, who then initiated the Stormcloak Rebellion. Ulfric was displeased with the new laws forced on the Nords via the White-Gold Concordat, which aimed to outlaw all and any worship of Talos, a Nordic god. This is because according to the nine other races of Tamriel there are only Eight Divines (Gods).

The Stormcloaks believe that the Empire betrayed Skyrim by signing the White-Gold Concordat with the Aldmeri Dominion at the end of the Great War. The Concordat, which heavily favors the Aldmeri Dominion (Thalmor), allows for the Thalmor to hunt down Talos worshipers. It is because of this that many Nords feel that the Thalmor hold too much power over the Empire.

The Imperial Legion seeks to eliminate the Stormcloak rebellion threat in Skyrim. With the uprising many Nords have begun to outcast those of the nine different races who are not native to Skyrim. Many times in Skyrim the Dragonborn can see a Dunmer citizen traveling to Solitude, stating "I was born and raised in Skyrim, but the Nords treat us like dirt".  In order to keep Skyrim in the Empire the Legion must strictly enforce the terms of the White-Gold Concordat.

Ulfric and the Stormcloaks believe that the Emperor has become a puppet of the Thalmor and therefore no longer holds the authority to rule over Skyrim. It is this defiance that caused Ulfric Stormcloak to kill the ruling king of Skyrim; High King Torygg. By right Ulfric should now be king of skyrim, but because of his violent display when killing Torygg some of the Jarls do not accept his reign. Many favor what the empire has done for them and see Ulfric as a power hungry murderer. This is where the province of Skyrim becomes divided into the Stormcloaks and the Imperials and the Civil war ignites.

An argument can be made that the civil war in Skyrim is mirrored to that of the American civil war.

During the American civil war the country was divided into two forces, the North (Imperials)
and the South (Stormcloaks). The North wanted to place new rules of government on the South that would drastically affect the Southerners way of life. The policy changes to remove slavers can be compared to that of the removal of Talos, the Nordic god. The South fought for the country to remain the same as the North fought to implement new rule.

According to Digitalhistory.uh.edu “Planters found it hard to adjust to the end of slavery. Accustomed to absolute control over their labor force, many sought to restore the old discipline, only to meet determined opposition from the freed people, who equated freedom with economic autonomy.”

We can assume the dramatic governmental and life style change made on the South caused them to be more racist. We can clearly see this in Skyrim as the Stormcloaks and Nords begin to shun the different non-native races for living in Skyrim. The Stormcloak capital Windhelm begins to move the Dunmer citizens into the barrows and not allowing them to work in high profiting employment positions.

As the south rebelled in the American civil war so did the Stormcloaks. They felt that to secure their rights, freedoms, and way of life they needed to place their lives on the line in the divided country.

Capstone Proposal: Cosplay Music Video

For my senior capstone project I will be making a cosplay music video. This is something that I feel will cover specific areas of my education that I have not experienced in my academic learning. These skills are also ones that I believe will make myself more marketable to possible future employers.

Cosplay music videos are not uncommon on the internet. With the wide growth in popularity and acceptance of cosplay, and the increasing number of conventions, almost every con goer takes photos or film of cosplayers. Any photographer who has a video camera can film cosplayers and add music to make it into a cosplay music video. But few have gone so far as to customize the music added to the video.

There are few names that come to mind when one thinks of a music parody artist. Weird Al Yankovich, Instalok, and those at College Humor are some that come to my mind. But overall there are very few who chose to take on the challenge of writing lyrics to music. This is one of the challenges I will be facing during my project and one of the defining differences between my cosplay music video and others on the internet.

For this project I will be facing many challenges that require me to learn a variety of new skills. For instance, I will not only be writing my own lyrics, to the song 'Domino' by Jessica J., but I will also be performing the vocals. Since I am no Katy Perry I will have to learn how to edit audio and work with auto-tune to improve the vocals. I will also be working with a video camera for the first time and using advance editing software.

In order to produce this video I will  need to learn to direct a film in the way that will make sense to my audience, cosplayers between the ages of 13-30. The majority of my filming will take place at Japanese and Comic cultural conventions. This allows me to socially and culturally connect with a wide variety of cosplayers.

I have been looking forward to creating a cosplay music video for some time. I am very excited to get started with this project and learning the new experiences that it comes with.

Exploring the Depths of Elder Scrolls

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is one of my favorite games. The graphics were top notch for its time, the nonlinear game play makes for a personalized story, and each NPC within the game has a unique back story that opens up a hidden world within the game that most players would over look just playing the main quest.

Skyrim was also the most graphically realistic game of its time. The detail that went into the textures of the most overlooked objects, like grains in the wood stumps, enhanced the reality of the world, almost making it feel like the player truly stepped back in time into a world where dragons roam free.

For this blog series I will explore and explain many topics relating to The Elder Scrolls series, more specifically Skyrim. I will research Norse mythology and culture and how it is accurately depicted in the game.
I will describe how the newest technology can improve game play while increasing the in game experience with the player. I will also explain how this game has affected our culture.

Throughout this series I will also explore into the expanded universe of Elder Scrolls into an online MMO game. I will see how the governmental issues within Skyrim mirror that of past governments. And I will discuss controversy within the world of Elder Scrolls both internally created and externally made though mods.

Skyrim is the most unique game of all the Elder Scrolls series. It is the first to allow a player to cut complete ties from the main story quest and venture off on their own personally designed adventure. Each NPC within the game feels like a real person and has a story to be told that increases the complexity and emotional connection to the game, if the player chooses to listen.

To give you an idea of how large Skyrim is…

Fill in the story (Razer Inc.)

As Jenny entered the Best Buy to purchase a new gaming mouse, headset, and gaming computer for her boyfriend. She wants him to have the best interface experience with his video games, but is unsure of which products to purchase for him. The friendly Best Buy employee greeted the troubled looking woman and asked if she needed assistance. Jenny, who was flustered, quickly told the nice man what she was looking for. "Follow me", said the man "I'll take you too our Razer gaming equipment." Once they entered the aisle Jenny was astonished by the vast amount of technology before her. "This brand here has the latest technology and highest performance quality for gaming equipment." Said the man. "This 14-inch Razer blade embodies the continuing drive to design the worlds best gaming laptops for those gamers who need increasingly powerful performance to play the newest games. Your boyfriend will surely not be left behind and have to deal with out dated equipment."
